Nativity Painting Presented to Gen. McNarney by Concentration Camp Survivors & Polish Displaced Persons

Watercolor painting by J. Wojokowski presented to General McNarney by "ex-prisoners of Concentration Camps and Polish Displaced Persons" on 24th December, 1946. The watercolor has characters in traditional Polish dress coming to the manger, where the Holy Family and angels are gathered, with a star overhead. In the background are snow covered mountains and a city with a cathedral spire rising from it. On the reverse is a presentation covered in clear plastic reading, "To General Joseph Mac Narney Commander in chief of 3rd American Army with best wishes for Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. ex-prisoners of Gr. Concentration Camps and Polish Displaced Persons from Center in Mermau. 24th of December 1946." The presentation is written in calligraphy on a separate piece of apparently parchment paper, and is attached to the reverse of the painting under a sheet of plastic. When General McNarney assumed command of United States Forces in Europe he was presented with an overwhelming problem: Hundreds of thousands of Jews as well as hundreds of thousands of other displaced persons, primarily of Polish or Baltic nationality were suddenly free from Nazi capture and extermination. However, their pre-war homes were no longer available to them in some cases having been destroyed, and in the case of many Jewish survivors having been taken by former neighbors. Additionally the gentiles in some areas proceeded to carry out pogroms against their Jewish former neighbors as in Kielce in Poland where Polish locals murdered 41 returning Jewish refugees on July 5, 1946, beating and stoning an additional 75. Added to this, our British Allies were protesting the movement of Jewish survivors to what was then still British Palestine, attempting to force the Americans to keep Jewish refugees in the occupied zone. General McNarney was thrust into the middle of this situation, and handled it so well that he ended up earning praise for all sides, as well as the gratitude of both Jewish survivors and displaced persons from various European countries. This painting is one of a number of touchingly personal recognitions he received from the people with whom he dealt. McNarney dealt with literally millions of survivors and refugees from nearly every country in Europe, and never lost his humanity, or his compassion. Size: 24 by 19 by 1 inches. Ezra Wood Silhouette Portrait of a Lady in Blue Dress

A fine "hollowed out" silhouette of a young woman in a blue dress, by Ezra Wood of Buckland, Franklin County, Massachusetts, circa 1820. This is a example of the work of Ezra Wood, being a "hollow cut" image, in which the initial image was cut out of white paper, which was then placed over black cloth. The white paper was then detailed by Wood in India ink. In this case, Wood has added details of her hair, necklace, and dress, coloring the dress in in blue. The image is framed in a fine gilt wood frame, also of the period, that has the label of the Reverend Glenn Tilley Morse, 186 High Street, Newburyport, Massachusetts. Ezra Wood is renowned as a true artist among silhouettists in America. He was born in Buckland 1798.and died there in 1841, being one of the very few silhouettists who was able to work in one place, as opposed to most who were by necessity itinerant. This silhouette demonstrates all of the features for which Wood is justifiably known. 3 Miniature Paintings, a Family Grouping circa 1800

Three exceptionally fine miniature paintings of a man, a woman, and a baby. They are in matching frames, and appear to date from about 1800. The man is in an almost military style coat and waistcoat, all in black, with a very high collar. It is possible that it is military, based on the waistcoat, but the coat has a civilian cut.He is painted in profile. He is a young man, possibly 30 years old, with large "Mutton chop" sideburns. The woman is in an Empire style dress, all in white with a white collar or fichu. She is painted in a view, looking at the artist. She is very attractive, and appears to be in her late twenties. The baby is a wonderfully detailed portrait. She is wearing a fancy bonnet, and a pink dress trimmed with blue. She is holding what appears to be a rattle or coral teething toy. On the reverse of this painting is a description in sepia ink and that the "Little Girl has a Philadelphia Rattle in her hand." All three paintings are framed in nearly identical black rectangular frames with bronze oak leaves at the top to hold a ring for hanging. The paintings are in oval openings with brass borders. Scottish Silhouettes of Mary Seaton & Man by Auguste Edouarte 1824

A superb pair of Scottish silhouettes, formerly in the collection of E.T.C. Brotchie, Director of the Glasgow Art Galleries, depicting an attractive young woman identified as Mary Seaton, and another of a man, possibly her husband, in matching frames. Mary Seaton is done in great detail for a silhouette, with pearl earrings, a white fichu, details of her dress, an elaborate hair arrangement, and a mass of curls on the side of her head. Auguste Edouart is the most famous and celebrated silhouette artist of his time, as well as being a painter in oils. Examples of his work are held in the National Portrait Galleries of England, France, and the United States. The second item may also be by Edouart. It is a hybrid, showing the man in silhouette, but with his face and hair a watercolor portrait. He is wearing a high starched collar, and his hair is in curls, typical of the 1820s. Both pieces are in oval frames, with brass rims, on black rectangular frames. The silhouette of Mary Seaton is far more detailed than most of the Edouart silhouettes that have appeared on the market, and is clearly a work on which the artist lavished extra attention. There is a label attached to the reverse of Mary Seaton's silhouette identifying it as being of Mary Seaton in 1824, by Auguste Edouart, and having been in the collection of E.T.C. Brotchie. There was apparently a similar label on the reverse of the man's portrait, but it is not present, although the clear plastic that once covered it is present. Size: Mary Seaton's silhouette is 5 3/4 by 4 inches. The portrait of the man is 5 by 4 1/4 inches. Provenance: Estate of General Joseph McNarney. Processing and shipping in the Continental United States is $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
