Three Painted Lacquered Wooden Boxes

Three small wooden boxes, lacquered, with fine small paintings on their lids: two are of ladies, one of a lady in Renaissance dress, identified as Adeline Patti, an Italian Opera singer; the other is of a young woman in 18th century dress. The third box is larger, and has a scene of people in Renaissance clothing at a seaport. The box with the portrait of the opera singer has a slightly fancier finish than the other two with an inlaid bottom, although the paintings on all three are extremely nice. Painted Tea Chest, a Painted Jewelry Box, & a Painted Portfolio

Three painted wooden containers, possibly painted by the same artist: A small tea chest painted with floral designs and birds. It has a lock. The inside is black lacquered, and the tea containers are lead foil lined, as was typical in the 18th and 19th century. The lids have carved mother-of-pearl knobs. The chest rests on four round feet. A painted jewelry box with a rustic scene, probably of Italy painted on the lid. The scene includes a monastery by a lake, with people picnicking in the foreground. In the distance are snow-capped mountains. There are yew trees at the sides. The body of the box is painted with flowers and swags. The inside of the box is lacquered and has a pull-out tray with compartments for a variety of things. The box has a lock, and the small key is inside the box, along with a number of tiny screws and an envelope labeled "Tiny screws for repair of jewelry box." A painted portfolio with wooden covers and cloth pocket inside, the front being painted with flowers with an ornately painted border. The inside is cloth covered, and there are several blank paper pages, with the pocket inside the back cover. Both front and back have tiny mother-of-pearly rests to protect the painted surfaces when open. Size: The tea chest is 5 1/2 by 7 3/4 by 4 1/2 inches. The jewelry box is 3 by 10 by 7 1/2 inches. Antique Mixed Wood Box

Wooden box composed of different woods, with a watercolor still-life painting framed on the underside of the lid. The box has brass hinges, gilded brass ornamental feet, and a lock on its lid and on the drawer. The upper compartment is lined with faded rose colored velvet. The box appears to be made of three different woods. In the General's inventory it is described as being of mahogany and satinwood, but there is also ebonized wood around the small watercolor inside the lid. The key is not present. Well-crafted cigarette case and small ashtray, both gilded on silver metal, both with the Spanish eagle with the Spanish coat of arms in gold on black. 3 Black Laquered Wooden Boxes Inlaid with Mother of Pearl

Three handsome wooden boxes, each black laquered, and inlaid with scenes in mother of pearl and other materials. One is a sewing sized box with cloth lined interior, inlaid with a scene of Windsor Castle. It is essentially rectangular, with scalloped edges. The second is a smaller box lined with tin, so possibly for tea or other food stuffs, inlaid with a cluster of flowers. The third box is the largest, and is inlaid with bunches of flowers. Two extremely nice small boxes, either for patches or pills, one in 800 silver, round, with repousse decoration and a gilded interior; the other in bronze, oval, but with a very fine small oval enameled portrait of the Emperor Napoleon I in his chasseur a cheval uniform on the lid. The second is marked France on the reverse, is hinged, and has very fine decoration around the outside. The silver box is 1 1/8 inches across and 3/8 inches tall. Two Painted Lacquered Boxes and a Bowl, from India

Two small painted lacquered boxes with lids and a bowl from India, with exceptional painting on each. They are each finely carved wood with painted exteriors, the bowl being covered with flowers, the round box having a hunting scene with a tiger, and the oval box with a village scene of churning and weaving. The craftsmanship on all three is excellent, the lids fitting perfectly and the thinness of the pieces demonstrating the carver's skill. The painting is also extremely fine, the two boxes being in a Rajput style, while the bowl may have been painted for sale to Europeans. Two Bone Snuff Boxes with Enameled Portraits, one of Napoleon as First Consul

Two round bone boxes, probably for snuff. One has a fine portrait of Napoleon as First Consul on the lid; the second is also round, but larger, with a portrait of a pre-Revolutionary French officer on the lid. He is wearing a wig, epaulets, and a gorget. The label states that the portrait is signed and dated, although neither is visible. There is a label inside the lid identifying him as a French Lieutenant General painted in 1786. Size: The box with Napoleon is 2 1/2 inches across and 3/4 inches tall. Two Russian Lacquered Decorative Boxes

Two small Russian lacquered painted boxes. Both are black with scenes on their lids, with red painted interiors.The larger of the two has a scene of mounted combat with apparently Christian knights fighting Moors. The paintings are very detailed, although slightly fanciful, with details painted in gold. This box is rectangular, with metal hinges, and is signed on the lid, the signature appearing to be N2987, with a name in Cyrillic, followed by 1946 and then another name in Cyrillic. The smaller box is an elongated oval, and beautifully painted flowers leaves and branches, with some picked out in gold. Size: The rectangular box is 5 by 3 1/4 by 1 1/4 inches. Greek or Russian Icon of the Virgin Mary with the Baby Jesus.

Icon on wood in a carved wood frame, the middle-sized of the three icons purchased by General and Mrs. McNarney from Farid Salman & Co, of Herod's Gate in Jerusalem in 1960. This one has lettering in Greekand has a raised wooden frame holding the icon itself. On the reverse is a holder containing an original copy of the letter from the Farid Salman Company. The painting is nicely executed. Mary is depicted in a red robe, making it quite different from Western images of the Virgin, who is almost always shown in a blue robe. Greek Icon of the Virgin Mary with Child Jesus.

A small Greek icon of the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus who is holding an orb.There is Arabic lettering on the upper right, which would be appropriate for an item made in the Greek portions of the Turkish Ottoman Empire. This is painted on a wooden plank, and is the smallest of the three from General McNarney. All three were purchased in 1960 from a dealer named Farid Salman with a shop at Herod's Gate in Jerusalem. Greek or Russian Icon of the Manger in Bethlehem

The largest of the icons purchased by General and Mrs. McNanrny from the merchant Salman Farid of Herod's Gate in Jerusalem. This depicts Jesus in his manger, with Joseph and Mary flanking him, the Star of Bethlehem, shepherds and sheep and a cow, and above, the Three Kings, and the Annunciation. There is writing in the field, which may be Russian, but is hard to make out. The icon, like the other two, is painted on a board, with a gold painted border. The Virgin is depicted in a pink robe. Ancient Iranian Pitcher

A terra cotta pitcher purchased by Mrs. McNarny in Tehran, with a letter from the store identifying it as being from the Amlasht area in Northern Iran and circa 700 BCE. This area is associated with artifacts from a culture that thrived there through the period of the Sassanian Empire. The pitcher is identified in the letter as a vase, but has both a handle and a larger lip. It is very sophisticated, well-shaped with a wide pouring lip atop a narrow neck that flows into a handsomely shaped jug. Size: 6 1/2 by 4 inches. Provenance: Estate of General Joseph McNarney. Japanese Chest Carved w/ Insignia personalized to General McAuliffe

A large wooden chest, beautifully carved, and brass bound, probably made of cedar, and personalized to General Anthony McAuliffe. There is a brass late in the lid of the chest presenting the chest to General McAuliffe from the officers and men of the 34 Infantry Regiment This was one of a pair presented to General and Mrs. McAuliffe, both of which are in this sale. The General's chest is carved with the insignia of divisions and units commanded by General McAuliffe, and is 23 1/2 by 37 on top, by 16 1/2 tall.  Both chests are similarly made, and were presented to the McAuliffe's during the General's tour of duty in Japan after World War II. Japanese Carved Wood Chest personalized to Mrs. McAuliffe

A carved brass bound cedar chest presented to Mrs. McAuliffe during the time of her husband's post-war command in Japan. The chest is a mate to the chest presented to General McAuliffe, but smaller, and without military insignia. Instead, it is carved with bamboo swaying in the wind. Inside the lid is an engraved brass plaque presenting it to Mrs. McAuliffe from the officers and men of the 34th Infantry Regiment.
