Ezra Wood Silhouette Portrait of a Lady in Blue Dress

A fine "hollowed out" silhouette of a young woman in a blue dress, by Ezra Wood of Buckland, Franklin County, Massachusetts, circa 1820. This is a example of the work of Ezra Wood, being a "hollow cut" image, in which the initial image was cut out of white paper, which was then placed over black cloth. The white paper was then detailed by Wood in India ink. In this case, Wood has added details of her hair, necklace, and dress, coloring the dress in in blue. The image is framed in a fine gilt wood frame, also of the period, that has the label of the Reverend Glenn Tilley Morse, 186 High Street, Newburyport, Massachusetts.

Ezra Wood is renowned as a true artist among silhouettists in America. He was born in Buckland 1798.and died there in 1841, being one of the very few silhouettists who was able to work in one place, as opposed to most who were by necessity itinerant. This silhouette demonstrates all of the features for which Wood is justifiably known.

Glenn Tilley Morse from whom the McNarneys obtained this silhouette, is known as one of the greatest early collectors of American art.
