Ancient Figural Relic Carving of Hindu Goddess Durga.

A very finely carved wooden plaque with a figure of the Hindu goddess Durga, the goddess of motherhood and strength. The figure is in very high relief, showing the attributes associated with Durga, including her scepter as mother of the universe. Accompanying the carving are a note written on notepaper from the Hotel Royal in Kathmandu where it was purchased, describing it and the person from whom it was purchased. Size: 13 inches tall by 8 1/2 inches wide by 2 1/2 inches deep. Provenance: Estate of General Joseph McNarney. Processing and shipping in the Continental United States is $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

The carving shows great antiquity, with a number of age cracks in the wood, and the nose of the goddess being largely worn off, and the contents of one hand being chipped. There is very little paint remaining.
