US Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield Carbine

An original Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield Carbine in .45-70 caliber with 1873 dated lock plate, and original sights, serial number 181230 with a star, manufactured in 1882. The star designates a weapon that was assembled using salvaged parts, in this case probably the lockplate. It was intended for re-issue, although possibly as a second line weapon. The carbine is complete with saddle ring and side bar, and has a very clear cartouche on the stock with the inspector's initials and the date 1881. The barrel has the usual VP over an eagle's head over the letter P. The breech block is marked U.S. Model 1873. Size: Overall length is 41 inches, and the barrel is 22 inches. Condition:

The bore is very dirty, but has good rifling. The action is tight and crisp. The external metal has superficial rust and a brown patina. The stock has a number of minor small dents from handling, and a couple of paint spots. The cleaning rod hatch in the butt plate is frozen. The markings are all very sharp on both metal and wood.
