U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword For NCOs by Ridabock

A very nice US Model of 1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword by Ridabock & Company, New York, in a handsome scabbard intended for wear by NCOs, usually of National Guard and Volunteer units. The scabbard has a gilt frog stud rather than rings, along with a blued scabbard and gilt drag. The sword itself is a fairly typical US 1860, with a one-sided down-turned guard with a panoply of arms and fine US Eagle. The knuckle bow also has a panoply of arms on it, a feature found on Ridabock 1860 Staff & Field swords. The grip is covered with large pebble ray or sharkskin, and has a darkened brass wire wrap. The sword does not have the down-turned reverse guard seen on some officers' swords. The blade is straight, double edged, with fine etching including a spread-winged US Eagle, flags, floral swags, and a large U.S. on the blade. It has the maker's name on the ricasso, Ridabock & Co. New York N.Y. Size: 36 inches long overall in the scabbard. The sword is 34 1/2 inches long, with a 29 inch blade. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance. Discounts given on combined lot shipping.

Provenance:MKI

Condition:

Very good plus condition. The blued scabbard is faded, and there are some minor rust patches on it. The gilt on the scabbard mounts is starting to fade, but is still largely present. The hilt has some old polish residue in the designs. The wire on the grip has turned black, but is all present. The grip shows only the most minor wear. The blade shows very minor wear with traces of rust by the washer, and some stains towards the point, but the etching is bright and clear.
