Joy Navasie (1919-2012, Hopi-Tewa) Whiteware Pot
A whiteware pot by Joy Navasie (1919-2012). The pot has a traditional shape with a round lower half that tapers into the base and it is decorated in symbolic motifs around. Signed on the underside with a frog drawing, a hallmark of Joy Navasie.
Joy Navasie was a renowned Hopi-Tewa potter that began as a teenager under the direction of her mother, famed potter Paqua Naha, the original Frog Woman. While both signed their work with the frog hallmark, the difference between the two lies in the frog's feet: Naha drew short, straight toes and Navasie drew webbed toes. Over her career, Navasie's work grew famous among the community for its whiteware, a technique pioneered by her mother.
