Hilda Coriz (1949-2007, Kewa Pueblo) Santo Domingo Pitcher
A Santo Domingo water pitcher by Hilda Coriz (1949-2007). The pitcher has a round body with a small spout and is decorated on all sides in orange flower motifs, possibly symbolizing sunflowers or daises, common aesthetics of Santo Domingo pottery. Lightly signed on the underside, "Hilda Coriz / 2001" with a small pot doodle.
Hilda Coriz was born into a noted Kewa Pueblo family known for helping to preserve and modernize Santo Domingo pottery. Hilda's mother and brother, Mary C. Coriz and Robert Tenorio, coaxed Hilda into the family "business" during the 1980s alongside her husband Arthur Coriz. Together until his death in 1998, Hilda and Arthur worked together on their pottery winning numerous awards for their large vessels using traditional materials and firing techniques. Though this pitcher was made by Hilda alone some years after Arthur's death, it embodies the elements of traditions of Santo Domingo pottery survived by their family lineage.
