The sitter is identified as Adah Isaacs Menken (1835-1868) an actress best known for her role in the play Mazeppa, a popular production that entertained miners during the Gold Rush era. Originally from Grass Valley, California, Menken was a renowned public figure of her time, often compared to the famed performer Lola Montez. The portrait shows her wearing a California abalone shell necklace and earring suite.
