Virginia City, NV Gold Badges and Photo presented to Capt. Joseph W. Locklin (1853-1938) comprising 1) Photo (4 1/2 x 7in.) of J. W. Locklin in full military dress wearing his 2) jewelers made gold and enamel (28grams) 1887 presentation suspension badge (1 3/8 x 2in.).The front enameled, “BATTERY A / FOR PROFICIENCY IN DRILL.” The back engraved, “Presented to CAPTIAN J. W. LOCKLIN / of / BATTERY A. N.N.G. / By his Comrades. / Virginia City. / May 8th / 1887. A second gold badge (1 1/4 x 1 1/2in. 8 grams) contained in a Chatelain & Golden Virginia City, NV black lacquered jewelry box. The jeweler made and stamped Braxmar N.Y. suspension badge features a rifle bar/pin with enameled “V. C. C.” drape holding a silver target medallion within a gold cross. The back engraved in period style, “”Best 200 Y’d. Score / at / Virginia Caledonian Picnic / 1886.”

Joseph W. Locklin (1853-1938) was a significant figure in the early days of Virginia City, Nevada, known for his involvement in the Comstock Lode mining boom.He was a proprietor of the Comstock Hotel, a landmark establishment in the booming town.His hotel catered to the influx of miners and entrepreneurs drawn to the rich silver deposits.
Frank Golden (1862–1911) emigrated from Ireland in 1880 and established a jewelry business in Virginia City in partnership with Chatelain. He later expanded his entrepreneurial ventures to Tonopah, Carson City, and Reno, where he opened the Golden Hotel. After Frank’s death in 1911, his son—also named Frank—carried on the jewelry business, eventually relocating it from Virginia City to Carson City.
Charles Braxmar (1850-1914) a jeweler, founded a business in 1879 specializing in badges for fire departments, police forces, and fraternal organizations. In March 1914, the company was incorporated as the C. G. Braxmar Company and grew to become one of the leading suppliers of emblems in the Northeast and eventually across the United States. Based in New York City, the company remained family-owned until 2000, when it was sold to the Blackinton Company of Attleboro Falls, Massachusetts.
