Claudina Lomakema (b. circa 1940, Hopi-Tewa) Redware Jar

A redware pottery jar by Claudina Lomakema (born circa 1940). The pot is a low shouldered jar with a narrow opening featuring Hopi iconography across, including spiritual beings and geometric banding representing rain, crops, migration, and connection to the spiritual world. Signed on the underside, "Claudina Lomakema."

Claudina Lomakema, though not as widely known as her contemporaries, is part of the strong lineage of Hopi-Tewa artists who have preserved and evolved their community's ceramic traditions. Her work reflects the techniques passed down through generations including traditional coil construction, stone burnishing, and outdoor firing.
