Dawn Navasie (b. 1961, Hopi-Tewa) Sikyatki Revival Jar
A Sikyatki revival style water jar by Dawn Navasie (b. 1961). The jar has a tall shoulder tapering into the base and a short neck with narrow opening. It is decorated around with intricate geometric motifs possibly symbolizing birds, feathers, clouds, rain, and other spiritual meanings. The checkerboard band around the neck represents balanced duality. Signed on the underside, "Dawn / Hopi."
Dawn Navasie is a noted Hopi-Tewa potter from the Water Clan. She was born into a family of renowned potters, including her mother Eunice "Fawn" Navasie, who began teaching her daughter the fundamentals of the craft when she 4-years old, and by 17 Dawn had perfected the skills and style. Overtime, she has become known for her large scale work that displays her favorite designs of weather elements and mythical beings.
