US Model 1841 Robbins & Lawrence Mississippi Rifle

A very nice US Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle by Robbins and Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont, dated 1849. in .54 caliber. The rifle has long-range sights that have been added, and the tang of the barrel is marked 1850. It has the appropriate brass mounts, including the patch box. It is particularly well marked, including the vertical U.S. on the butt plate, A.W. over P on the side of the barrel, VP over the eagle's head on the breech. The cartouches are extremely faint on the sideplate area, but there is another stamp of three letters that are partially visible. The sight alteration is not the Drake alteration produced for the State of Massachusetts, but the very simple sights that were originally produced for this rifle were almost universally replaced for use during the Civil War. Robbins & Lawrence produced 15,000 of these rifles between 1848 and 1853, and they continued in use through the Civil War, when they were particularly favored by the Confederacy due to their accuracy and fine quality. Size: 48 1/2 inches long overall, with a 33 inch barrel. The forend cap is 6 inches below the muzzle. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance. Condition:

Very good condition overall. The ramrod is missing. There are several marks on the metal on the lower part of the barrel. The Robbins & Lawrence name are partially obscured on the lock plate by a patch of pitting, but the US is clearly visible. The stock may have been lightly sanded in the past. The rifling in the barrel is very good plus, and the action is excellent. The metal is very good, other than the marks on the barrel and the small patch of pitting on the lock plate.
