U.S. Ames 1840 Cavalry Saber Sword & Scabbard

One of the scarce second year of production Ames Model 1840 Cavalry Saber, undoubtedly issued during the Mexican – American War. The sword has the standard Ames Cabotville 1846 stamps on the ricasso, as well as the US inspector’s marks U.S. over J.H. confirming its date of manufacture and acceptance. The sword retains a leather covered wooden grip with brass wire binding. The initials W.A.T. appear on the pommel. Size: 43 ¼ inches long overall, with a 35 ¼ inch blade. Processing and shipping within the continental US $65 plus a 1.5% replacement cost insurance fee. Discounts given on combined lot shipping.

Condition:

The blade is brown overall. It has period sharpening and rust stains towards the point. The grip leather and wire may be replaced as they are excellent, and appear recent. The brass hilt is very nice with no bends. The scabbard has been harshly cleaned over pitting, but is solid and fits the blade extremely well. The scabbard throat appears correct for the sword. There are no visible stamps on the drag. The blade is straight and tight to the hilt, with no wiggle at all.
