US 1840 NCO Sword & Scabbard circa 1890

An interesting sword & scabbard based on the 1840 NCO sword, but with a lighter front guard, no reverse guard and a blade similar to an 1860 staff and field officer’s blade, in a steel bodied scabbard with brass mounts. The hilt is an interesting composite, with the pommel and grip identical to a standard 1840 NCO, but the guard based on a later 1860 staff and field sword but with plain brass. There is a stamp in the knuckle bow of three cursive letters that cannot be read. The blade is a double edged one of light construction with no visible etching or marks. The scabbard is very nice, and is a lighter weight version of a steel bodied 1840 NCO sword, but made for a lighter blade. Dimensions: The sword is 37 inches long overall in its scabbard. The blade is 30 inches long. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

The hilt and scabbard are excellent, although the drag is missing a screw. The blade is stained overall, with some minor patches of pitting.Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
