Three (3) Santa Clara and Jemez Pueblo Redware Pots

A lot made up of three redware pots by Santa Clara and Jemez Pueblo artists:

The largest pot has a rounded body with a slightly narrowed opening and lip at the top. Its high shoulder curve serves as a visual canvas for the main depiction, which appears to be a water serpent (avanyu). It is signed on the underside by Ethel Vigil (1950-2021), a contemporary Tewa potter from Santa Clara Pueblo and daughter of noted potter Mida Tafoya.

The mid-size pot has a round base that narrows at the neck, following the motion of the sculptural swirl around the body. This wraps around a sgraffito design with an inlaid turquoise stone on the front of the pot. It is signed on the underside by Brenda Tafoya, a contemporary potter from Jemez Pueblo and descendent of noted potters Vangie Tafoya, Maria Sanchez Colaque, and Maria Martinez.

The smallest pot is a round miniature jar with a low, flat top mouth and swelling body, decorated by carved designs. It is signed by Anita Suazo (b. 1937), a respected Santa Clara Pueblo potter that comes from a long line of artists. Since 1979, she has won numerous awards for her work with pieces on display in collections around the world.
