P. Webley "The Bulldog" Small Pistol with Leather Purse Case

This is a smaller than usual British Bulldog double action with the name P. Webley on the barrel. It has a folding trigger, and comes with a fitted suede purse, clearly intended for a lady to carry. The pistol is .30 caliber and has a beautiful dark blue pistol, finish, with the hammer, trigger, and ejector being chrome or nickel plated. The grips are checkered walnut. The gun has a number of proofs, two on the side of the barrel, and one on each of the five chambers. Underneath the grips the block letters JD are stamped. The top of the frame has “THE BULLDOG” stamped into it. The purse is fitted to the gun, with a suede body and German silver clasp. Bulldog revolvers were extensively produced in Britain, Belgium, and Spain. Most were marked “British Bulldog,” and many were made to appear British, even though the majority were copies made especially in Belgium. This one is of particular interest as it is a smaller size, with folding trigger, as well as its original purse-like holster. Even though it is marked “P.Webley," the firm that originated the design, it may be a copy. Large numbers of the originals and copies were sold in America, where they are seen as the second most popular gun in the West, following the Colt Single Action. The proofs are tiny, but may be Birmingham proofs. They do not appear to be Belgian. Size: 6 ½ inches long overall, with a 2 ¼ inch barrel. Shipping: $35.00.

Provenance:Lawrence Shelton Collection

Condition:

Condition: Excellent. The gun retains about 95% of its bright, dark blue. There are areas on the frame by the screws, and on the right side of the barrel where a little rust has affected the finish. The nickel is all excellent, as are the grips. The gun functions perfectly, and is quite tight. The purse is very good, with some dulling to the finish on the metal. It is rare to find one in such excellent condition.
