Large Rockingham Glaze "Souter Johnnie" Character Jug

Large and early Rockingham glazed ceramic character jug of "Souter Johnnie," a character from the poetry and stories of Robert Burns. The jug was probably made in Yorkshire about 1840, and has the distinctive dark reddish-brown glaze associated with Rockingham ware. It shows a jolly, round-face man in a cloth cap, wearing a bow-tied cravat and coat. It has a sturdy handle and poring spout on the side. It is extremely well sculpted. Size: 11 1/2 inches tall by 10 inches wide.

Generally excellent, with minor wear to the glaze at the spout and on the handle, allowing the yellowish clay typical of Rockingham to show through
