General Anthony McAuliffe Hand-written Wartime Letter on 103rd Infantry letterhead

A hand-written personal letter from General Anthony McAuliffe as Commanding General of the 103rd Infantry Division to his niece, Patricia, on March 4, 1945. The letter is written on both sides on his stationery as commanding general of the 103rd Infantry Division, and has the Division crest at the top of the front. It refers to the many newspaper and magazine articles written about his defense of Bastogne, to which he credits leading “the toughest fighting troops in the world.” He says that the German prisoners referred to his men as the “butchers with the big pockets,” referring to their parachute jump suit jackets. He also writes about how hard it was to leave the 101st Airborne, and mentions that “fine American boys are dying every day…” The letter is addressed to “Pat” and is signed “Tony.” Provenance: Estate of General Anthony McAuliffe. Very good, with very slight yellowing, and a minor tear on one of the folds.
