Garnet "Flower Girl" Pavatea (1915-1981) Hopi-Tewa Pot

A Hopi-Tewa pot by Garnet Pavatea, also known as "Flower Girl" (1915-1981). The pot is a classic, wide shouldered body with a tapered rim, decorated in simple but bold symbolic motifs. Signed on the underside, "Garnet Pavatea, '96 Hopi."

Garnet "Flower Girl" Pavatea had a productive and popular career, famously known for her redware with corrugated decoration. She began making pottery in the 1940s and consistently did so until her death. Although this piece is not an example of that style, Pavatea mastered the basic fundamentals of Hopi-Tewa pottery showcased here.
