Drew Lewis (1927-2005, Acoma) Anasazi Revival Olla Jar

A contemporary Acoma Pueblo olla jar by Drew Lewis (1927-2005, Acoma). The jar has a wide body with a narrow neck and flaring shoulder, and is decorated in black, red, and natural white geometric motifs, including diamond medallions. Signed on the underside, "Drew Lewis, Acoma, N.M."

Drew Lewis was born into the Roadrunner clan of the Acoma Pueblo to Lucy M. Lewis, who is considered one of the matriarchs of pottery in the past century. Although it is custom for women, not men, to practice pottery making within their communities, Drew expressed interest later in life and would become one of the only men within the Acoma to produce pieces. His mother taught him the fundamentals of working with clay that were passed down through generations of their family, allowing him to specialize in traditional hand coiled and painted vessels of the Anasazi Revivial style.
