Civil War Soldier Photos and Letters

Large cabinet card/ boudoir card photo of members of the Wilson family, with the central photo being of Col. John M. Wilson, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry at the battle of Malvern Hill. He was a Military Academy graduate (class of 1855) was brevetted for gallantry at least three times during the Civil War, and retired in 1901. Other images on this compiled photo include Civil War officers Downs Wilson and Thomas J. Wilson, as well as other members of their family. Excellent condition, 5 ¼ by 8 ¼ inches. A very fine tintype of a Civil War Union artilleryman and his wife, the man wearing an Artillery shell jacket with painted piping. His wife stands next to him wearing a Civil War period dress. Excellent condition, 2 ½ by 3 inches.  CDV photo of a Civil War “cotton clad” steamer run by the US Army. The image shows the steamer bow on, with several members of the crew, African-Americans in forage caps. The photo has a Civil War revenue stamp on the reverse. It is very good.  Civil War CDV of a child in uniform, bust shot only, by Giles Bishop of New London, Connecticut. The image has been trimmed, is yellowed, and is 2 ¼ by 3 3/8 inches. Civil War era mated tintype of an attractive young woman, purportedly the sister of a Confederate Cavalryman who gave it to Annie Deaner, the sister of Frank Deaner in 1862. It is loosely mounted on a board with typed and hand-written information. A handwritten letter requesting assignment of quarters by Paymaster Major F. Hixson, US Army. This is Foster Amos Hixson of New York (1834-1904) who enlisted as a Major in the US Volunteers in 1864 and mustered out in 1867. This December 1865 letter is addressed to Captain Holder, Post Quartermaster in Charleston. Confederate Civil War letter to A. B. Coppage from Josiah Botsell, who wrote from the camp of the 6th Kentucky Cavalry in 1864. This is quite a fiery anti-Union letter, mentioning “..horrors at the hands of the Federal Authorities,” and “atrocities” committed by the “half-civilized Negro soldiers.” The author would have been a member of the “Orphan Brigade” of Kentucky Cavalry who served in Morgan’s Division of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. The letter is fragile but clear, and quite legible. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
