Carved Case Aneroid Barometer by Admiral Fitroy

Exceptionally fine and early Admiral Fitzroy aneroid barometer circa 1880 in a very handsomely carved mahogany wall case. This is the barometer developed by Admiral Robert Fitzroy, former captain of HMS Beagle during Darwin's famous voyage. With this barometer, he really invented the skill of forecasting the weather. This is a particularly large and fine example of his barometer, with dials for adjustment at the base, which are almost never seen. There is also a separate thermometer on the left side near the bottom of the case. The case is very attractively carved, with a fine depiction of possibly acanthus leaves at the top. The casing is quite elegant, and the paper charts inside the case are very clear and detailed. Size: 50 inches tall, 12 inches wide, and 3 inches deep.

Excellent, approaching mint condition truly remarkable for its age.
