Brass “Peace” Powder Flask

This appears to be an original brass “Peace” flak for gunpowder, so called because of the clasped hands in sun rays that appear over a trophy of arms with a shield with the letters “US.” The flask is of a large size, consistent with issue along with a Mississippi Rifle, It shows moderate wear, and has a minor dent towards the base. It is, unusually, unmarked except for an inspector’s mark “H” by one of the eagles’ heads, probably being the stamp of Caleb Huse. The flask shows signs of age, including pitting on the spring that closes the flask. The flask is complete with the two triangular suspension rings on the upper sides. Similar original flasks are known. Size: 9 inches long overall. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

Very good overall, still in functioning condition. There is a small dent at the base of the flask. The flask is unmarked other than an “H” inspector’s stamp by the head of one of the eagles. It is possible that the base of the spout has been replaced, which would explain the lack of the date and Ames markings, although unmarked examples are known. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
