9 Large Photos of post-Civil War Soldiers & Sailors, many with Swords, Rifles

A matted cabinet card size albumen print photo of four soldiers presumably in Manila, three in khaki, one in a white uniform with tropical helmet and Krag rifle. They are seated on a bench in front of a primitive building. Cabinet card sized photo of “Old” Joe Wheeler, former Confederate, then US General, with two boys in front of tents, with US flags, wearing straw hats, apparently playing poker and drinking whiskey. There is a Trapdoor carbine, a large mess coffee pot, and a field stove. The tent behind them has large painted letters “S. & K.” A large two-sided albumen print photo with a cadet band in grey uniforms and kepis and on the reverse a company of cadets in similar uniforms with three officers in blue with swords: two with 1840 NCO swords, and one with 1860 staff and field officer’s swords. The cadets are holding Trapdoor Springfields. “ILL. 1899” is written on the matte, and it is signed by B. F. Harris. A similar two-sided image with a group of officers in blue with kepis, most with 1840 NCO swords, one with an 1850 foot officer’s sword. The other side has cadets in a classroom along with a few civilian men and women, apparently during a Spanish language lesson. The image is also by Harris, and is labeled “ILL. 1899.” Another similar two-sided image of cadets with a blue coated officer in front of a brick building, all cadets wearing Civil War period US oval belt plates. The reverse has the same group standing at the same place, with their oval US plates, the officer carrying an 1872 cavalry officer’s sword and wearing a 2nd Cavalry badge on the front of his kepi. This is also by Harris and labeled “ILL. 1899.”  Another similar two-sided photo of cadets with Trapdoor rifles, wearing US oval belt plates, and with a US flag in the center. This is also signed by Harris and labeled “ILL> 1899. The reverse photo shows a larger group of cadets with two crossed flags. The cadets are again wearing oval US belt plates. The officers in blue are wearing a variety of swords including 1840 NCO swords, and an 1850 foot officer;s sword. Several of the cadets have bayonets on their belts. A large matted albumen print photo of a group of cadets in full dress, with a seated officer in blue with “CMA” on his collar. The reverse is signed, “Yours Truly, ‘Irish’ MacKenzie, Oct. 2, 1898.”They are all wearing mourning bands on their sleeves. A large matted portrait photo albumen print of a Petty Officer of the Navy in blue coat with mohair braid. He is wearing a peaked cap with crossed anchors, and has crossed anchors on his collar. The photo is by Bushnell, California. There is some damage to the matte only. A very large matted albumen print photo of 10 men serving a breech loading gun inside a turret or sponson. Dimensions: The largest is 12 by 10 inches, and the others range down to two cabinet card sized at 6 3/8 by 4 1/8 and the image with General Wheeler at 8 by 5 inches. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

Most images are excellent. The next to the last image has paper missing from the front of the matte.
