1887 San Francisco Cabinet Card of Young Chinese Gentleman

Exceptional cabinet card photo of a young Chinese man, seated in a chair. He is in traditional robes, wearing a skull cap, holding a fan. Beside him is a table with a bowl of rice, a pipe, and on a shelf underneath, a stack of Chinese books. On the reverse is the photographer's information: WM. Shew's Photographic Establishment No. 523 Kearney Street, San Francisco, and the signature of the subject: Yours Truly, Fung Loud, 26th Sept, 1887. Identified images of Chinese immigrants of this era are very scarce, and this one is of particular interest, as it is carefully posed with the bowl of rice, pipe, and books, suggesting prosperity, plenty, and scholarship. This may have been a photo prepared for an arranger Marriage, sent to the bride's family to show the excellence of the match. William Shew is perhaps the most significant San Francisco photographer of the late Victorian era. Size: 5 7/8 by 3 7/8 inches. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance. Discounts given on combined lot shipping.
