When a reporter asked FDR where the Doolittle Raid (April 18, 1942) took off from, he said they were based in Shangri-La, In those days reporters had a sense of humor and didn’t press further. The line stuck and In 1943, there was a War Stamp Drive to support the construction of the soon to be real aircraft carrier Shangri-La.
