World Columbian Exposition Guard Sword & Scabbard by Ames

A short sword of the Guard at the World Columbian Exposition, made by the Ames Sword Company, and marked W.C. G. (World’s Columbian Guard) and serial numbered 2533 on the ricasso. The sword has a brass hilt with a black painted wooden grip. The pommel is in the shape of a half-globe, a theme echoed on the Guards’ buttons. The crossguard is two brass ellipses, hollow inside, that join at a quillon block with the letters “WCE “deeply cast into it. The blade is straight, double edged, and has a single fuller running down the middle of the blade until it tapers out about 6 inches from the point. The scabbard is black leather with brass mounts held on by brass rivets. It is broken just above the throat. The story of the World Columbian Guard is a very interesting one. The Guard was commanded by Col. Edmund Rice, who was a Civil War winner of the Medal of Honor for bravery at the battle of Gettysburg. The WCG was largely composed of former US Army Soldiers, many of them veterans of the Civil War. Dimensions: 26.25 inches long overall, with the blade being 20.5 inches long. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

The sword itself is very good. The blade is fine, retaining almost all of its original polish, although the point and the blade on one side have been sharpened. The wooden grip shows some wear, is missing a tiny bit of its black paint. and is slightly loose. The hilt is very good, but one side of the cross guard is very slightly bent down. The pommel is off set as though it were taken off and not put back correctly. The scabbard is rougher than the sword, having been broken just above the drag. The brass mounts are heavily patinated, with verdigris on the throat in the outline of the frog.
