War Merit Cross with swords 1st Class. Pin marked "62"' this being the factory code for Kerbach & Oesterhelt of Dresden.
The war merit cross was originally designed to be a successor to the old non combatant iron cross and had the same 3 class structure. This medal had 2 versions with and without swords. With Swords was for soldiers who did meritorious but not strictly combative acts. Without Swords was for civilians who did meritorious deeds.
