Melville’s ‘The Smith-Spilman Lineage.’ This section is written about Samuel Collier Smith, who is noted as the start of the second generation of the Smith-Spilman lineage. Mentioned in the book in regards to this painting, “It was a large canvas, probably 2 1/2’ x 4’ in size, mounted in a heavy frame of gold leaf. At Sophie‘s death, it was left to her daughter, Emily Spilman, and was bequeathed in turn to Phyllis Melville, Morris, daughter of Hugh M. Melville, Sun City, California. Mrs. Morris was living in 1965 at…Redlands, California…”
