Pearl Bray Young (American, 1899-1970) 1929 Landscape Painting
A framed landscape painting on canvas by Pearl Bray Young (American, 1899-1970). Signed in the bottom left corner.
Young was born August 1899 in Lake City, California and became known as a commercial artist of her community. In a 1948 interview with the Stockton Evening and Sunday Report, she shared that her earliest childhood memories are of drawing pictures during rainy day recesses at school, but the first paid job as an artist came during High School for a local cattle stealing court case. In 1919 she moved to Stockton with her husband, Edgar Young, and became known for her array of commercial work from murals to portraits to miniatures. However she went on to explain that her preferred subjects are character studies and landscapes produced in realism with oil paints, though she never truly feels satisfied with the finished product. In her older age Young did less commercial work, but continued to paint in her studio decorated by decades of drawings and paintings she produced. She passed away in Stockton California in July 1970 at 80-years old.
