Matilda Lotz (1858-1923) Oil on Canvas Painting, Sheep with Dog, Pastoral Scene. Signed and dated ‘1888’ lower left. Lotz is one of California’s most well known animal portraitists. She attended the San Francisco School of Design, at which time she won numerous awards and graduated with honors. Continuing her studies in Paris, she won two gold medals at the Paris academy and also painted while visiting family in California, including painting portraits of William Randolf Hearst and Leland Stanford.
