Jopovi Tafoya Silva (20th-Century, Santa Clara Pueblo) Blackware Pot

A Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico blackware pot by Jopovi Silva. The pot features a low, wide, and rounded silhouette that tapers subtly at the base and flares gently at the top. Around the rim is a band of alternating matte and polished geometric designs, possibly symbolizing feathers or rays, kiva steps, or rain and other water elements. Signed on the underside.

Jopovi Silva (20th-century), though not as widely known as his contemporaries, is part of the strong lineage of Santa Clara artists who have preserved and evolved their community's ceramic traditions. His work reflects the techniques passed down through generations including hard-coiled local clay, stone burnishing, and firing in a reduction atmosphere.
