Glass Vial Relic from the Donner Party’s Murphy Cabin (C. F. McGlashan, 1889)
Square glass vial with original red wax seal, approximately 2 inches high, containing wood shavings from the foundation log of the Murphy Cabin at Donner Lake, site of the infamous Donner Party encampment during the winter of 1846–47. The vial retains its original printed paper tags, one certifying authenticity and signed by historian C. F. McGlashan, dated August 12, 1889, and witnessed by W. H. Hill, Justice of the Peace; the other pledging that proceeds from the sale of 5,000 such relics would go toward the erection of a monument to the Donner Party.
