General Anthony McAuliffe, a folder of 24 personal letters signed “Tony” or “Dad”, all on Joint Task Force One letterhead

A really fascinating archive of letters written by General Anthony McAuliffe as a staff officer of Joint Task Force One, the first Bikini Atoll Nuclear Test in 1946. The letters are all to his wife, Helen, his daughter Patricia, and his niece, and are type-written on Joint Task Foce One letterhead, and personally signed by General McAuliffe. The letters date between May 10 and June 25 1946, and were written on board the U.S.S. Mt. McKinley, the flagship of Joint Task Force One, under command of Vice Admiral W.H.P. Blandy, who commanded the first two Atomic Tests at Bikini. With the letters are two post-marked cancellations for the Atomic tests, as well as 12 of the envelopes from the letters, all post-marked Fleet Post Office on Joint Task Force One envelopes. The content of the letters is personal, mostly detailing their daily routine on board ship, the weather, the food, the movies they watched, and the bridge games and other social interactions with Admiral Blandy and others. Condition:

Most are excellent. One letter is slightly creased with a folded corner and small tear. The envelopes are in various states, the ones to Helen McAuliffe being in nicer condition than the ones to Patricia.
