G.A.R. Medals & Souvenirs of J.S. Buskirk, 51st Pennsylvania Volunteers
Remarkable collection of 2 G.A.R. medals, and a variety of related souvenirs and badges belonging to Jacob S. Buskirk, who enlisted in Co. H of the 51st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on Nov. 28, 1861, was severely wounded and captured at the battle of Camden, North Carolina, imprisoned in the Dismal Swamp prisoner of war camp, being exchanged and discharged due to the severity of his wounds, but re-joined on Jan. 18, 1863 in Co. C, 48th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry receiving promotion to Regimental Sergeant Major. This was an "Emergency Regiment," raised to counter Lee's invasion of the North. They fought at Gettysburg, and afterwards were mustered out. Buskirk returned to his employment as a Railroad Agent, telegraph operator, and cabinet maker, but was an active member of the G.A, R.,, moving to Los Angeles.
The collection includes two G.A.R. medals, one bronze, the other gilded bronze; a miniature of the GAR medal; an enameled miniature of the medal; a round similar lapel badge; a sterling silver GAR Souvenir spoon commemorating the 1902 GAR Convention in Washington, and engraved "Effie;" two GAR buttons, one for the cuff the other for the coat; J.S. Buskirk's card as Quarter Master of the Frank Bartlett Post of the GAR in Los Angeles, California, identifying Buskirk as past Inspector of No. 6 Post, and as serving in Co. H, 51st Pennsylvania, Army of the Potomac; a silk ribbon from the 46th National Encampment of the GAR Departments of California & Nevada in Los Angeles in 1912; the original issue envelope for the GAR membership medal. Size: Everything is contained in a small frame, 6 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches.

The ribbon on the bronze GAR medal is detached, otherwise everything is about excellent, with minor yellowing to the paper items.
