A very fine and scarce US 46 star flag in wool, apparently from the burial of the Civil War Veteran whose name is written on the hoist: " D. Andrews, Company G 28 Iowa Infantry." This is a scarce US flag to begin with as we only had a 46 star flag from 1908 when Oklahoma was admitted to the Union, until 1912 when Arizona and New Mexico joined the Union. This is a large flag, being 5 feet by 10 feet, making it extremely likely that this was the Veteran's burial flag, given to his family after his interment. Daniel Andrews enlisted in the 28th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on September 3, 1862. He was mustered out on July 31, 1865, having served in all of the Regiment's campaigns and battles. The Regiment first served under General Grant in the Western Theater, being present at Fort Gibson and Champion's Hill in the Vicksburg Campaign, and then actually serving in the trenches before Vicksburg. They later served in the Red River Campaign, where they suffered heavy casualties at Sabine Cross Road. In 1864 they were transferred to the Army of the Shenandoah under General Sheridan, and served at the battles of Winchester, Fisher's Creek, (where they captured 6 Confederate cannon) and at Fisher's Hill. They then fought at Cedar Creek, in Grover's Division, suffering heavy casualties. They then were moved to Georgia, where they occupied Savannah until the end of hostilities.
