Antique New England Paint Decorated Box or Chest

Handsome pre-Civil War wooden box or small chest lined with paper from the Northampton Courier, a newspaper published in Northampton, Mass. from 1831 - 1858. The chest is handsomely painted in a deep green, with red trim, and may be a military officer's small campaign chest from the era of the Mexican - American War. On the top are the gold painted initials W.C. The interior is covered in several sheets from the Northampton Courier, a Whig leaning newspaper from Northampton, Massachusetts only in publication from 1831 - 1858, ceasing publication with the rise of the Republican Party, and the demise of the Whig Party. The chest had a lock, the works of which are now missing, and there are two small holes alongside the key hole. Size: 8 3/4 inches tall by 18 3/4 inches wide, by 11 inches deep. Condition:

Very good condition overall. The red trim on all the edges is slightly chipped and rubbed in places. The paper lining is remarkably intact. There is a stripe of missing paint near the location of the lock. The underside of the chest is not painted.
