American Zograscope

A very handsome Zograscope, American made, on a very attractive turned maple stand with bone or gutta percha finial. A Zograscope was a device invented in the 18th century for magnifying pictures, and giving them a slightly three-dimensional look. They were found largely in upper-class homes, and have a metal plate to which one places an image or illustration, and a large round magnifying lens through which one views the picture. This one is on a stand of turned dark wood, probably maple, with a white turning finial holding the frame of the Zograscope. The back plate and magnifying lens are wood framed and hinged at the top. Size: 27 inches tall. The round base is 7 3/4 inches in diameter. The frame for the glass and plate is 8 3/4 inches wide. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $80.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance. Discounts given on combined lot shipping.

Condition:

Very good and working well. There is a small turned spindle on one side of the frame, but its mate on the other side is missing. There is a crack through the bone or gutta percha finial on which the frame turns, but it seems secure. The back mirror of the Zograscope has one area of minor flaking, but is generally very good plus.
