1903 Letter from Admiral George Dewey to British Admiral l. Field

A hand-written note by Admiral George Dewey on his stationery as Admiral of the Fleet, with hand-addressed envelope to British admiral Sir Frederick Laurence Field, regarding a photo of Dewey that Field had requested. The note is dated 19 February, 1903, from Dewey's office as Admiral of the Fleet. The photo that Dewey sent had been taken on the USS Olympia, Dewey's flagship when he accepted the Spanish surrender in Manila Bay in August, 1898. The letter is signed, "Sincerely Yours, George Dewey." Both the note and the envelope are entirely in Admiral Dewey's handwriting. George Dewey, born in 1837 was the only person ever to have held the rank of Admiral of the U.S. Navy. Dewey had entered the Navy in 1854, attending U.S.N.A. at Annapolis and graduating in 1858. He served in Farragut's fleet throughout the Civil War, ending the War with the rank of Lt. Commander. Having achieved the rank of Commodore in 1896, Dewey commanded the US Asiatic Fleet on the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, and attacked the Spanish fortresses and fleet in Manila Bay in April, 1898, achieving a stunning victory including the destruction or capture of every ship in the Spanish fleet, with an American loss of only one sailor. He was named Admiral of the Navy in 1903 and continued serving in various capacities until his death in 1917. Dimensions: 6.75H x 5.25W inches.
