1862 Calaveras County Mining Deed — H. Tyler to L. Levy, Carson Hill
Printed and manuscript deed dated January 28, 1862, conveying from H. Tyler to L. Levy a one–thirty-third interest in the Little Lode Quartz Claims located on Carson Hill, Calaveras County, California. Executed on a printed form from Sanders & Slooper, Notaries Public and Conveyancers, Mokelumne Hill, with bold handwritten entries, signatures, and witness. Folds into a compact 8 × 14-inch format.
Why This Deed Matters: Carson Hill was among the richest gold-bearing sites in California, producing some of the largest nuggets ever found—including the famed 195-pound “Morgan” nugget—and generating millions in gold during the height of the Gold Rush. Mining claim deeds from this locality and period capture the fevered speculation, partnerships, and legal formalities that shaped early California’s mineral wealth. Surviving examples in clear, legible condition are scarce and highly desirable for Gold Rush and Western history collections.
