162nd New York Officer's Kepi w/ IVth Corps Badge

A very rare Officer's kepi of the 162nd New York Volunteers, the "Metropolitan Guard," with the cloth insignia of the IVth Corps on the top. This is a very late-Civil War or post-Civil War kepi by Baker-McKenney of New York, made for an officer of the 162nd New York Volunteers. It has the gadroon embroidered "162" in a wreath on the front, and a Corps badge for the late-War Western Theater IVth Corps, surrounded with gold wire embroidery on the top. It may be slightly post-War based on the style, but it is by Baker-McKenney who were formed in 1864 and bought out by Ridabock in 1880, prior to the formation of the GAR. On that basis, it seems likely that the kepi was made right at the end of the Civil War, or very slightly post-War, as the Regiment was mustered out of service in October, 1865. It has Staff buttons on the sides, and the makers' name on the lining, which is intact. The sweat band is present, but not attached. The kepi comes with its original black silk storage bag. The peak is fully bound and appears to be lacquered. The stitching on the cloth badges has faded and appears to have been logwood dyed. There is a gold braid strap across the front of the kepi. Size: 10 inches long, 7 inches wide, and 3 1/2 inches high. Processing and shipping in the Continental United States is $40.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

Condition: The wool is in very good condition, with little to no fading. The Corps badge is very good, with very minor staining. The regimental number is tarnished, as it is probably silver wire. The wreath is faded but very good. The peak has some wear visible on the underside. The interior lining is very good, but the Baker-McKenney logo in silver paint is faded. The sweat band is detached, but intact and very good. The silk bag that contains the kepi id fair, with a minor tear. Overall condition is remarkable for its age.
